To increase the lifespan of your shutters and to maintain its gorgeous look, you need to clean them regularly. A little TLC will go a long way. We know, life can be busy. By no means do we expect you to clean your shutters every day or even weekly. By simply dusting them once a month and ‘deep cleaning’ them once or twice a year, your shutters will stay in great shape.

How to Clean Shutters the Right Way Dust Shutters Regularly As we’ve mentioned before, if you keep your shutters dust-free, they won’t require intensive cleaning. Close shutters and wipe the dust off each slat with a clean microfiber or cotton cloth. Start from the top and work your way down. You can also use a vacuum with a dry brush attachment. Rotate slats 180 degrees and repeat the process.

Wipe Slats with a Damp Cloth If there are any stains or to get rid of dirt build-up, wipe with a damp cloth. Never use strong detergents and do not use a lot of water as the wood (or other shutter material) will swell or discolour. Water and mild detergent will do and make sure you wipe it dry right away.

Clean Exterior Shutter Hinges Once a Month It can become windy if you live near the coast and sand build-up in the hinges might prevent your shutters from working properly. Brush away any dirt and put a drop of oil or lubricant under the head of the hinge pin. Allow the lubricant to work by opening and closing the shutters several times.

Apart from cleaning your shutters, if you take care to open and close them properly, you enhance their durability. That is all it takes to keep your shutters looking like new and in working condition!
