Choosing stylish designs for your home can be exciting, but if you end up getting the measurements wrong and your curtains or accessories do not fit, the fun will be over. It can be a complicated task to measure a window for a new curtain rod or track. If you haven’t done it before, here are some tips to assist you.
Choosing the Right Curtain Rod or Track
You will need to choose whether you want a more modern curtain track or a traditional curtain pole. Additionally, you need to decide how you want to operate your curtains — electronically, by hand or a cord.
Once you’ve come to a conclusion, you need to pick the colour. Make sure the colour fits in with your current home decor to keep it consistent.
Measuring the Window Properly
Curtains should not be the same size as the window, and you will need to add extra measurements to allow for space (15cm to 20cm) on either side. Install the rod or track between 5cm and 15cm above the top of the window and don’t forget to add brackets at the end.
Hanging Curtain Rods and Tracks
Before you start, you will need the following:
- Pencil
- Tape measure
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Rawl plugs
- Saw
- Spirit level
Step 1
Start by marking the spot where you want your rod or track to sit on the wall, and according to your measurements.
Step 2
Drill holes where you’ve made markings and fill each hole with a rawl plug. Rawl plugs enable you to screw brackets in place.
Step 3
Your curtain rails will need hooks after which you can add your curtains. When fitting curtain rods, you will first need to slide in the curtain rings and fabrics before attaching it. Once this is done, you can attach the finials.
